Black silver is not a different metal. It is sterling silver, and the black colour is part of the metal, on the surface, a reaction of the metal to a chemical patination. I particularly love the colour as it reminds me of Welsh slate and anthracite coal, both found in Wales and both of the highest quality.

In some of my pieces I polish off the black to show the silver underneath so there is a contrast in colours, and it starts the process of wear which I love, as it changes as you wear it. The black lifts from the raised surfaces first and stays in the grooves and texture, so a piece slowly becomes a record of how it has been worn. If you ever want it back to how it started, it can be re-oxidised easily. In others, like Decorative Concepts, it remains black like ink on paper, which is fitting for that collection.

Mine are made in the Llandeilo workshop, alongside jewellers I have chosen for the gallery who love oxidising and patinating silver for their own stories.
